Once again, my body clock decided to be utterly evil. That in conjunction with the unbearable heat seeping in through the shuttered window had me up earlier than I anticipated. As I was already up, I thought I might as well get myself together for the day of work that I knew I had ahead of me.
Once again, comparatively, this day was rather uneventful in that I essentially wrote...all day long.
Writing at the breakfast table, I kept drinking my coffee and orange juice, a kind of ritual at this point. Knowing that I could not stay in the apartment all day long, unless I truly wanted to go insane, I made my way towards Reid Hall where I knew I could find wifi and a cool room. Walking down towards Montparnasse, I started to sweat profusely. I was amazed at how strong the heat was. Yes I was exerting energy walking, but not enough to deserve this kind of bodily response. It was a scorcher and this wasn't even close to the worst of it.
As we passed Eric Kayser, the boulangerie, I felt it was necessary to stop in. There were only 10 days left in Paris, I had to make the most of them. At the same time, I realized that I had never actually bought a pain au chocolat all for myself in the 7-ish weeks that I have been here. It is genuinely astonishing, I know.
Ordering a pain au chocolat and this chocolate and pecan cookie (it looked good I'm sorry), we finished our journey to Reid Hall. Sitting down in the refreshingly chilly room, I could finally breath again. With my pain au chocolat in hand, I was geared up to write my redaction that was due at midnight and that I had not even started yet. Nor did I know in what direction I was taking it either. After some time in the classroom, I began feeling quite antsy and jittery, almost this anxious uncomfortableness that I could not concretely place. I was unsure whether or not it was the work I had to do, the impending interview that I had planned for the next day, or just a general feeling knowing that my time in this city was dwindling. Either way, it suddenly became ten times more difficult to work. Eventually, Anna and I decided it was time to grab a quick snack, get some fresh air. Staying "on brand," we bought a warm baguette and some hummus. What can I say, I am just a hummus fiend.
Losing track of time, we essentially had to jog back to make it in time for the 8 o'clock dinner. After this one, there were only three more during the next week. A little crazy to think about...
Dinner's dessert was the most refreshing part of my day: a lemon sorbet.
I was served an inordinate amount of it, not by choice, but I ate it all anyways. With each tart bite, it could feel a wave of coolness wash over me. It was so worth stuffing myself...
